Dutch Oven Cleaning and Seasoning (click on images for full descriptions)

Here we have a rusted dutch oven that may have not been used for awhile, stored improperly, or is sticky. We first want to clean it up, using salt and oil, never soaps. Warm pot on coals or in oven before beginning. Add oil and salt and start scrubbing.

Scrub entire pot with cloth or paper towels, until rust and debris is loosened. This pot required 2 rounds. Wipe out all salt, oil and debris between rounds.

Here is the final result after cleaning and seasoning. Your dutch oven should reach a dark petina. It helps to cook greasy/oily foods for the first few times with a new oven, further seasoning the pot. Use this process after each meal cooked, returning to a clean and seasoned condition.
